First Aid for Therapists and Aestheticians

Our First Aid for Therapists course is suited to all complementary, holistic, and alternative therapists, as well as aestheticians.

This 6 hour course covers the most common injuries, illnesses, and conditions likely to be seen in the therapy room setting/clinical practice.

Your course tutor is Dr. Marc Johnson Ph.D., a psychotherapist, complementary therapist, and former/retired medical advisor & emergency medical provider to the US military in Iraq, Government of Barbados (Ministry of Health), and the European Union. Marc has over 30 years experience in primary healthcare, including frontline trauma care, to share with his students.

Priorities and purpose of first aid
Assessing the scene
Basic Life Support & the Chain of Survival
Resuscitation
Choking
Recovery positions and airway maintenance
Wounds and bleeding, dressings and bandages
Burns and scalds
Fractures, sprains and strains
Major medical emergencies:
- Heart attack and angina
- Stroke
- Shock
- Epilepsy and other seizures
- Asthma
- Anaphylatic/allergic reactions (incl. use of epipen)
- Head injuries
- Suspected spinal injury
Eye Injuries
Fainting
Body substance isolation, infection control, and PPE
Needlestick injuries
Record keeping and legal requirements

In addition to matching the common HSE syllabus for Emergency First Aid, the course also covers the additional aspects expected to affect therapists, such as treating a patient in a chair, on a therapy couch, or bed, and elsewhere.
