Therapy Programmes to relieve symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS refers to a collection of symptoms commonly experienced by many people throughout the course of their lives. IBS is often debilitating, and can lead to a lack of social confidence, anxiety, panic, and loss of socialisiation.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion meaning simply that it is not a diagnosis of a specific disease or medical/biological condition, but that all major serious medical issues and diseases (such as bowel cancer, Crohn's, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and diverticular disease) have been investigated, and ruled out.

This is clearly frustrating for IBS patients who are then left with no real diagnosis except a label of IBS, for which there are a variety of pharmaceutical treatments. Whilst some people respond well to medication to relieve bowel spasms and excessive gas, others find little relief, even after several different prescription medications have been tried.

There are three accepted categories of IBS based upon common types of symptoms. These are:

IBS-C These people most commonly suffer from constipation

IBS-D These people most commonly suffer with diarrhoea

IBS-M These people suffer with both of the above, often unpredictably

The National Health Service (NHS) guidelines and treatment pathways for all conditions are issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The NICE guidlines for Irritable Bowel Syndrome are clear in their pathway advice for medical professionals. This is that after medication has been tried, the psychological pathway should be followed, with hypnotherapy being the top therapy for IBS following extensive clinical research. As a NICE recommended pathway, hypnotherapy for IBS may also be funded by the NHS, and we can advise on this, although a majority of our clients are privately funded due to the time taken by the NHS to make funding decisions.

What can be done?

IBS responds incredibly well to hypnotherapy, and whilst we cannot be successful with 100% of clients, we have a great record of success in significantly and even eliminating symptoms of IBS, with even some cases of IBS that have been classified as "treatment resistant", or "treatment refractory" by gastroenterology consultants or GPs, finding relief from the most severe symptoms.

What does it entail?

Our GutWellness Programme uses a Biopsychosocial (BPS) approach to IBS. This is:

Biological - What is going on clinically and what has been previously investigated by medical professionals. The gut has a major affect upon the mind due to chemical responses from the gut into body and mind, and vice versa.

Psychological - A strong factor in IBS is the relationship between the mind and body. Rebalancing anxiety and stress often has a powerful effect upon IBS symptoms

Sociological - A person's life and experiences has a major affect upon their wellbeing. Their environment has a huge affect upon wellness, as do relationships, work, health, and so much more. All of this is taken into account to determine as much information as possible to aid recovery.

A 5 session programme over approximately 7 to 10 weeks is ideal for reducing and even eliminating symtoms of IBS. This schedule will be discussed with individual clients taking into acocunt their specific requirements.

Pricing

Our GutWellness Programme is priced at £300 and incorporates our full MindWellness programme (indivually priced at £250)

A free initial consultation is included as part of the assessment and suitability process. This simply ensures that no one that is unsuitable for therapy spends money unnecessarily, and that therapy is likely to work for them. A therapy prescription is created in agreement with each client.
